Major Network Operator
Project Type: Phone Connectivity Software Development
Customer: Mobile Operator
Product Overview
Millions of users today have 3G phones capable of accessing the Internet at high speeds. Yet few understand that they can connect their phone to their laptop and receive broadband access almost anywhere in the country. This software is designed to simplify the connection process for users, making the mobile broadband experience of truly 'plug and play'.
ChallengeA global mobile operator wanted to simplify mobile broadband for its subscribers by removing the perceived need for a separate modem. Separate modems can be seen as too complex, and also cost the operator more in additional subsidies. By simplifying access to mobile broadband via the handset, the operator aimed to increase subscriber numbers, opening the market to less technology-savvy corporate and consumer customers. Penrillian was tasked to create a compact application that would run straight from the phone when it was plugged in, managing the installation of any required drivers and automating the connection to the network. The software needed to conform to the operator's design standards and be portable across multiple devices to maintain a consistent user experience. It also needed to support international network standards and languages for the operator's networks around the world.
Objectives- Develop a compact, portable application
- Simplify connection and configuration
- Support multiple networks and languages
Method DeployedThe process began with the preparation of a prototype for the 2007 CeBIT event. The operator gave Penrillian a detailed specification for what the product must do, but the freedom to define the full functionality. Penrillian quickly delivered a series of prototypes, each incorporating enhancements and new features based on feedback from the client. The final prototype was delivered in time for the event and generated very strong interest. A complete product was commissioned for launch at CeBIT 2008: That meant ruggedising the prototype, adding new features based on customer feedback, and ensuring that the software was highly portable. Penrillian's work on the prototype was well-regarded and the company was chosen to produce the finished product.
Results
The first device to feature the software was launched in September 2007, and created huge interest. More phones featuring the software are now being rolled out worldwide and plans are in place for Penrillian to extend the software to further devices.
