Project Type: Entertainment Application Customer: Orange Platform: BlackBerry Project Overview: Orange already offered its users a complimentary film and cinema service on Android and iPhone platforms; known as Orange Wednesdays. The content-rich app provides continuously updated cinema venue, programme, review information and special 2-for-1 ticket offers. To develop a matching high-quality experience for the smaller screen and menu-button-led navigation system of BlackBerry devices, Orange turned to Penrillian. “We were looking for pedigree developers who could cope with challenges, brought strong Blackberry experience and already had a good relationship with Orange. Penrillian had the lot.” Daniel James, Head of Products and Innovation, Orange Digital Challenge Penrillian was asked to recommend how the relatively small screen space available on many devices could be optimised in conjunction with specific BlackBerry idioms. A major concern was to give BlackBerry customers, not accustomed to interactive touch-screens, an Orange Wednesdays experience of similar quality to that on other platforms. “Penrillian's BlackBerry experience is a very saleable feature for any development. Their approach was to take the most complex part of the project up front on the principle that it removes any risk from the time-scale as early as possible. The more pedestrian functions were left for later when no harm could be done.” Daniel James, Head of Products and Innovation, Orange Digital Objectives:
“Their testing team and ours worked together on the new material in each interim software release and passed it on to our branding team and other stakeholders for approval with no problems. It was an incredibly fast solution.” Daniel James, Head of Product and Innovation, Orange Digital What we did: Penrillian recognised that a careful balance was needed between visual brand and technical solutions to make full use of BlackBerry's particular strengths. Accordingly, the team developed extremely high quality functionality, coupled with a compact, easy-to-understand user-interface (UI) designed very carefully to enhance rather than compromise the Orange Wednesdays brand experience. Although working to an ambitious development schedule, the team suggested a series of innovations that were quickly tested, fine-tuned and implemented. Menu-button use was combined with four smaller-than-usual, click-through screen tabs that lead directly to other parts of the app. The team also met the compressed time-frame by making three, phased app releases, each with improved functionality, that were pushed through the BlackBerry App World rapidly. Throughout, the project proved a perfect example of Agile Development with regular fortnightly software releases followed by swift client feedback improvement loops. “Their approach is innovative and really reliable. Communications in and out of Penrillian are great. We were very confident that they could hit the time-scale which they did while including great innovation around the product as a whole. I was really, really pleased.” Daniel James, Head of Product and Innovation, Orange Digital Results: With just five weeks of development time available, fully-tested and approved software was delivered to the BlackBerry App World ahead of the target summer school holiday block-buster season. Orange was able to meet its ambitious deadline and extremely high quality criteria while extending the increasingly popular Orange Wednesdays experience across another major platform and a very different navigation environment. “It was a great project to work on. The entire team was very communicative and responsive. Orange made suggestions that we discussed and could turn quickly into solutions. It was a tight, friendly relationship with a shared goal to deliver a good app as soon as possible.” Jill McKinnon, Project Manager, Penrillian Click here to download this case study in pdf format
