Background

Ukash was looking for ways to drive the purchase and redemption of vouchers and a mobile app was presented as the ideal opportunity.
Ukash enables consumers to shop, pay, send money and play online, all using cash.

Consumers simply exchange cash for a unique 19-digit Ukash code. As every Ukash code is totally unique, consumers do not need to hold a payment card or register to use the service.

The Challenge

Ukash has typically rolled out software development on a waterfall model – a sequential design process – but was now looking for ways to innovate more quickly. The aim was to present stakeholders with an early proof of concept so that they could make good decisions about directing investment.

The challenge was to develop a proposition that will drive redemption volume, rapidly deliver a prototype product that could be demonstrated and test the Agile way of working and proving a case for moving from waterfall.

Results

Ukash recognised that the shift from waterfall to Agile was a significant cultural change. So when Penrillian offered its incubation programme, a rapid prototyping service, which sees ideas transformed into prototypes in just three weeks, it seemed like an ideal opportunity to test an agile approach.

The final prototype was delivered on Day 15 of the incubator programme. The working app delivered merchant deals to Ukash customers. Users can personalise their own deal selection and Ukash can push out notifications about new deals. Ukash was able to roll out a pilot as soon as it had the relevant data in place to populate the app with content.
